Prior to the season, MIB and myself did an epic-yet-little-read nine-part NFL preview, where we each predicted the records for all 32 NFL teams, as well as the playoffs.

Now that the season is over, and we’ve thoroughly embarrassed ourselves, let’s see how wrong we were.

NFC East

Philadelphia Eagles (10-6) – Both Sharkey & MIB had the Eagles at 9-7 this year, with neither of us predicting them to win the division.  tie

New York Giants (10-6) – Sharkey had them at 9-7 and being the first team out of the playoffs, MIB had them at a respectable 8-8. advantage Sharkey

Dallas Cowboys (6-10) – Both were way wrong, but Sharkey was way wronger.  MIB had Dallas going 10-6 and winning the division, while Sharkey had them going 13-3 and playing in the Super Bowl.  advantage MIB

Washington Redskins (6-10) – The greatest disagreement in ERP history (click here) showed MIB putting Washington in the playoffs at 10-6, and Sharkey saying it wasn’t possible with Washington going 6-10.  advantage sharkey

NFC East verdict?  Sharkey knows his ‘home’ division better than MIB, but not by a huge margin

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons (13-3) – Both liked Atlanta this year, but not for a 13-3 record.  MIB had them going 9-7, while Sharkey had them going 11-5.  Advantage Sharkey

New Orleans Saints (11-5) – Again, both liked New Orleans, but one was more accurate.  Sharkey gave New Orleans a 13-3 mark again this year, while MIB kept it safe, and went with an 11-5 record.  Advantage MIB

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-6) – MIB was pretty far off with his 5-11 prediction of Tampa this year.  5 games away, though, is enough for him to “win” this prediction, as Sharkey said 3-13.  yikes.  Advantage MIB

Carolina Panthers (2-14) – It turns out we’re both optimists.  Sharkey said 8-8 for Carolina, MIB said 6-10.  Once again, it was a case of being less wrong for MIB.  Advantage MIB

NFC South verdict?  MIB takes it 3-1, moreso because of Sharkey’s futility.

NFC North

Chicago Bears (11-5) – Who saw Chicago winning this division & getting a bye?  Nobody on ERP.  Once again MIB is the benefactor of over-stupidity by Sharkey, as his 7-9 prediction was one game closer than Shark’s 6-10 record.  Advantage MIB

Green Bay Packers (10-6) – This is a tricky one.  Both had GB going 12-4 this year, and both were two games off.  MIB had that record good enough for #1 in the NFC, while Sharkey only saw the Packers as a wildcard team.  Was Sharkey more right?  Kind of.  Tie

Detroit Lions (6-10) – Both saw the Lions improving this year, but only one nailed it.  Sharkey said 4-12, while MIB was spot on with a 6-10 prediction for Detroit.  Advantage MIB

Minnesota Vikings (6-10) – Ouch.  Things are starting to get out of hand for Sharkey, and MIB is the main beneficiary.  MIB was wrong, saying 10-6, but Sharkey was way off, saying 13-3.  Advantage MIB

NFC North verdict?  Another 3 out of 4 division for MIB, who know holds an overall 7-3-2 edge in 2010 predictions.

NFC West

Seattle Seahawks (7-9) – MIB was actually pretty close on this one, his 6-10 guess only one game off.  Sharkey, was again, proves he knows nothing, as 4-12 wasn’t even close.  Advantage MIB

St. Louis Rams (7-9) – Another battle of who was less wrong, and this one is even.  Both said 2-14.  Tie

San Francisco 49ers (6-10) – Another draw, another way-off prediction.  Both said 9-7.  Tie

Arizona Cardinals (5-11) – Both were clearly in tune with each other on the NFC West this year, however wrong we ended up being.  Both said 5-11, and both were correct.  Tie

NFC West verdict?  MIB wins, 1-0.  An 8-3-5 edge on the NFC as a whole proves Sharkey should just stick to the NFC East.

Overall, MIB said Green Bay & New Orleans would be division champs, but both were wildcards.  He missed on the other 4 playoff teams.  Sharkey said New Orleans would be a division champ, and Atlanta & Green Bay would be wildcards.  3 of 6 playoff teams, but he mixed New Orleans & Atlanta up.

AFC West

Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) – Neither was really close on the Chiefs, but for once Sharkey was less wrong.  MIB said 5-11, Sharkey had them one game better at 6-10.  Advantage Sharkey

San Diego Chargers (9-7) – Although one game off on our predictions, MIB and myself had different views of the Chargers.  Luckily, I was more right.  I said 9-7, and on the downswing.  MIB said minimum 10-6.  Advantage Sharkey

Oakland Raiders (8-8) – Both liked the Raiders this year, but Sharkey’s AFC West luck continues to shine.  This team, which was really better than 8-8, went 8-8 like Sharkey predicted.  MIB went one better, calling for 9-7.  Advantage Sharkey

Denver Broncos (4-12) – Neither liked the Broncos, but both liked them a bit more than they ended up.  Both said 6-10.  Tie

AFC West verdict?  Sharkey gets back in the game, taking the division 3-0.  MIB still holds an overall 8-6-5 lead.

AFC South

Indianapolis Colts (10-6) – Both had Indy as the best team in the NFL.  Sharkey went slightly overboard, saying 14-2, which allowed MIB’s 13-3 prediction to win this one.  Advantage MIB

Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8) – One of Sharkey’s more wrong picks, he said 4-12.  MIB called him out on that, and said 8-8 was more likely.  Advantage MIB

Houston Texans (6-10) – Once again the sexy pick before the season started, neither of us bought into the hype.  MIB, unfortunately, bought into it a bit more, and called for 9-7.  Sharkey said 8-8.  Advantage Sharkey

Tennessee Titans (6-10) – Sharkey said this team would improve, and finish 9-7.  MIB agreed it was possible, but said 7-9 was more likely.  Advantage MIB

AFC South verdict?  It’s starting to get out of hand for Sharkey, who lost this one 3-1.  MIB’s overall lead is now 11-7 with 5 ties.

AFC North

Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) – Both had Pittsburgh in the playoffs, but only one nailed it.  Sharkey called for two 12-4 teams in the division, with Pittsburgh winning the tiebreaker, and the division.  MIB said 10-6 was more likely.  Advantage Sharkey

Baltimore Ravens (12-4) – Once again, Sharkey said 12-4, and MIB said 10-6.  Advantage Sharkey

Cleveland Browns (5-11) – MIB was pretty close on this one, saying 4-12.  Sharkey missed the mark, calling for 2-14.  Advantage MIB

Cincinnati Bengals (4-12) – Both said 9-7, both were way off.  Tie

AFC North verdict? Although only winning 2-1, Sharkey was far more accurate in the AFC North.  Even so, MIB still holds a 12-9 lead with only one division left.  In divisions, MIB has taken 4, while Sharkey’s taken 3.

AFC East

New England Patriots (14-2) – Although only one game apart, we had very different opinions on the Patriots.  MIB called for wildcard, Sharkey called for division champ.  At 11-5, Sharkey’s prediction was slightly better than MIB’s 10-6.  Advantage Sharkey

New York Jets (11-5) – MIB’s 11-5 prediction was spot on, while Sharkey fell short by calling for 9-7.  Although, MIB said they’d be one of the best teams in the league, while Sharkey said they’d struggle and hang on for the 6th seed in the AFC.  Take that as you may.  Advantage MIB

Miami Dolphins (7-9) – Both said 9-7.  Tie

Buffalo Bills (4-12) – Both were wrong, as Buffalo was far more competitive than anyone expected.  MIB said 1-15, while Sharkey lucked into a 2-14 guess.  Advantage Sharkey

AFC East verdict?  Sharkey ends up taking the division, 2-1.  Which means both MIB & Sharkey were the ‘winners’ of 4 divisions.  MIB finished with the edge in the overall predictions, though, winning 13-11 with 8 ties.

Overall, in the AFC, both had Baltimore, Pittsburgh, New England, New York, and Indy, as well as San Diego, in the playoffs.  Both went 5 for 6.  Sharkey had Pittsburgh & New England winning their divisions, with Baltimore & New York as wildcards.  MIB had it reversed, with Baltimore & NY taking the divisions.

Sharkey finished with one more correctly picked playoff team, with 8 compared to MIB’s 7.

MIB had the Colts beating the Ravens, and the Packers beating the Saints in the conference championships, with Indianapolis as his Super Bowl Champion.

Sharkey had the Cowboys beating the Vikings, and the Colts beating the Ravens in the championships, with Indianapolis as his Super Bowl Champion.
